The cleaning of the main altarpiece of Burgos Cathedral will cost 93,000 euros and will be done by 2021
The vice-president of the Cathedral VIII Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021, Antonio Miguel Méndez Pozo, and the dean of the Cathedral, Pablo González Cámara, representing these institutions, have signed this morning an agreement for the cleaning of the main altarpiece of Burgos Cathedral. Thus, the Foundation will contribute a maximum of 93,000 euros for the deep cleaning of this Mannerist work that presides over the central nave, within its line of work of recovering the cathedral’s heritage within the framework of the 800 years that the Cathedral will celebrate in 2021.
Although the altarpiece was restored nearly twenty years ago, the accumulated dust and humidity have deteriorated it to the point of needing an exhaustive cleaning. The work will last three or four months and the intention is to start as soon as possible, in summer, so that the altarpiece will look its new image already at Christmas.
During that time, a large canvas with the picture of the altarpiece will cover this space, so that the worship will not be interrupted and there will still be celebrations, as explained by the dean of the Cathedral.
The cleaning of the main altarpiece will join another series of interventions that have been carried out in the temple in recent times, such as the restoration of the retroquire or the cleaning of the choir. Also the cleaning of the organs or the restoration of the Christian banner of Las Navas, paid for by the Cathedral VIII Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021.
